We will start the presentation by focusing on the importance of treating people who have disabilities as “people first” and how this concept is compatible with AADMM’s ethical standard of treating people with fairness, discretion and integrity. We will briefly address stereotypes that people with disabilities face, and how those stereotypes can be used even unintentionally to cause exploitation or lead to false assumptions. The first part of the presentation will conclude with some practical advice regarding how to help someone with a disability, and some do’s and don’ts that will be useful for maintaining the best interests of your clients. The remainder of the presentation will focus on other ethical issues such as confidentiality, including a brief discussion of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act, (HIPAA), issues related to competency and capacity, differences between the two, the types of disabilities where competency and capacity could come into play, warning signs to look for, and where to look for assistance.

This session eligible for 1 credit hour of Ethics toward CDMM® recertification.
